What I don't get is that a Reverend in one of the "sophisticated" Protestant denominations actually believes that throwing salt around casts out Satan.

The only other time I've heard of that is when I read Huckleberry Finn.

The standard explanation is that homophobes suffer from repressed homosexuality. They actually hate themselves. The failure of your understanding suggests that your are highly heterosexual. Of course, if you actually like homosexuals as sexual partners as well as those of the opposite sex, then you might be bisexual.
I don't necessarily buy this explanation, but I think that homophobes are far too much obsessed with other people. I can't imagine hating anyone because of their sexual, artistic, or musical tastes.
