Dale,

<Unless I miss my guess, the primary motivation for moving to Morgan will be die size. >

I would say the primary reasons are power and speed. The current die size is not that big to cause any meaningful problems but without lower-power AMD will be exposed in the mobile segment and without more speed AMD would be exposed at the lucrative high-end desktop.

<you can bet that all Spitfire production will end shortly after Morgan is introduced>

Yeah, it makes no sense for AMD to produce Thunderbirds and Spitfires once Palominos and Morgans are introduced (except for short-term risk mitigation and customer issues)

Chuck

"the primary motivation for moving to Morgan will be die size"
This is what I tried to say. Gave too much emphasis to the speed path enhancements. The optimizing would involve a small die shrinkage, although I would be surprised if they got it all the way down to 81mm^2, just taking it down to 90 would be a big help. It also wouldn't surprise me if there was some attention paid to making it more manufacturable, I am guessing that the yield in Dresden is somewhere in the 80% range.

And while I agree with you as far as overlapping both Morgan and Spitfire, I am doubtful that the ponies will be in Al, this is a different thing that moving a design from Al to Cu (or vice versa) using their cell libraries.
