1GHz PCs: RDRAM and DDR Considerations

Microprocessor frequency roadmaps have accelerated over the last year to exceed 1GHz. In
fact, according to PC World, "CPUs took almost 20 years to hit 500 MHz, but they took just
eight months to zip from 600 MHz to 1 GHz."

The incremental improvements of the DDR device over SDRAM will fall short of the memory
performance required by systems using the latest processors. Today’s RDRAM devices meet
the requirements of the >1GHz PC.

DDR component supporters maintain that this device is an evolutionary product, because it is
a synchronous DRAM with additional features. However, DDR is not evolutionary to system
manufacturers. A DDR-based system requires a separate motherboard with a new layout,
connectors and components which are not compatible with an SDRAM memory subsystem.
Further, DDR-based motherboards are expected to encounter layout and implementation
problems because of its non-evolutionary nature.
