The pace of optical company formation and development seems to be expanding, based on LU's outflows.

Newark Star Ledger has been following Lucent's fall very closely. Ellen Simon has a piece on Sunday morning with an interview of Doug Griffeth at Caywood Partners, a recruiter for start up optical companies.

"Two years ago, nobody (at Lucent) returned out calls. Now for every 10 numbers we dial, eight people enter an active dialogue with us. Eight of ten is a scary number. If we're looking for a VP-Engineering or Director of Sales, we're only talking to vice presidents and directors." and, "All the people I place get rich." He says $100k to $250k one year retention bonuses are common.

The article describes three major exits in three weeks, one to softswitch Tachion, one to Kymata, and John Drew to explore other options. As an EVP, he headed up the voice/data buildout unit.

Nexabit was purchased by LU for $1.08 bn last year. The five founders and 40 programmers left LU and set up shop across the street. "They're too rigid, they don't understand our (router) business" one founder said.

Good article. Thanks for sharing!

Here's a bit more:

<<<Q. If investors don't mind spending what still seems like a lot of money to establish a presence in this area, which stocks should they consider buying?

A. Nortel Networks is by far the highest- quality name in fiber optics. To manage the growth they have with only one hiccup is amazing.
Beyond Nortel, you look for companies with good technology and a very good management team. The companies that fit in there are Ciena, Corvis and Sycamore Networks. Outside of Nortel, Ciena has the longest history as an optical stock.

Q. What about the components makers?

A. JDS Uniphase and Corning are the two best holdings. They both have a very strong list of customers.
