'tis the reason I prefer shorts in stodgier areas like retailing (KSS, WMT) and puts in places like the SOX. Of course, a short and hold approach to co's that are dying (AMZN comes to mind) should also be part of a well balanced portfolio.

There is much to be said for puts.

And how many times have we seen the big drop happen the month after ours expire?

That's why I tend to the LEAPS. I've got Amazon Jan 2002 and even some Jan 2003.
