hi ed

i can tell that you are a detail person as much as i am. with that in mind....

re, "I think I have found where the "Advanced" confusion lies"

first of all, i don't think there is any confusion on my part. i have said quite clearly that following the clickstream you posted does not get me to where you ended up. and i have also said that the reason is because you said to click 'properties', when in fact the 'advanced' button was what worked for me.

"My advanced tab does not display(grayed out) if "use a proxy server" is unchecked"

neither does mine. that is not the 'advanced' button i am referring to. that 'advanced' is also grayed out on my settings since, like you, i do not have 'use a proxy server' checked.

the 'advanced' button to which i have been endlessly (and futilely) referring to is located right beneath the 'properties' button in dial-up settings.

your clickstream:

>>> "Tools/internet options/connections/settings/properties/dialing/Enable idle
disconnect/Disconnect when connection may not be needed" <<<

does not work for me. substitute advanced for your properties, above, and it works.

no confusion

:)

Ed and all,
Today is the first day in a very long time where I didn't get disconnected while online. I only tried it on MSN so far but my husband said he didn't have any problem on AOL either.
It looks like unchecking those little boxes might have done the trick. Too bad one of the many techs that I spoke to at Dell didn't think of it.
Thanks again everyone for all of your help.
Susie
