Chuck,

With Mustang core, the problem for AMD is not power consumption.

We do not know this for sure. AMD is attempting to lower the power significantly with the Mustang core, but we do not know yet how well they have succeeded. Athlon (and the Alpha -- largely designed by the same guy) both rely on very high current to obtain high clock rate. AMD will have to lower current in half to compete with current P3 desktop processors -- not to mention mobile P3 processors. This is a huge challenge for AMD, and I suspect that the fundamental Athlon architecture is not easily "tweeked" for low current. That is why I suggested awhile ago that AMD may have to go to SOI or 0.13u for Mustang and/or mobile Athlon. We shall see. I think that if AMD can lower Athlon power by 30% that it would be a huge accomplishment for them, but I don't see how this can compete with Intel's low power mobile designs.

I hope that I am wrong.

Pravin.

With Mustang core, the problem for AMD is not power consumption. The problem I see potentially cropping up is that of infrastucture.

If power consumption is not a problem that would be a terrific news. The infrastructure problems will be overcome sooner or later, but the Mustang core will be with us for a year or more, so if it in fact energy efficient, AMD should do very well.
