Bush was backed by a large paper in the key battleground region of central Florida. The Sun-Sentinel said Gore has been an "able and active vice president" for eight years. "Gore understands the ways of Washington, is known and respected by the world's leaders, and has outlined policies that, overall, make more sense than those of his Republican rival George W. Bush." But the Sun-Sentinel's sister newspaper, the Orlando Sentinel, had a different view. The Orlando Sentinel's endorsement called for a change to the "coarse behavior, infantile squabbling and naked greed at the top," saying that trust in government has been undermined by such behavior and that the nation needs a president who can be a role model. Bush is the candidate to do that, according to the Orlando Sentinel. "An upright but tolerant family man, the two-term Republican governor and former businessman bases his approach to government on a principle not blown by shifting political winds: The smaller the government, the better." The Miami Herald said the vice president is ready now to be a good president while the Texas governor is not. The St. Petersburg Times called Gore "the clearly superior candidate." But the Orlando Sentinel said Bush could serve as a role model and "remains true to his philosophical core." Gore was also endorsed by Florida Today of Melbourne, but The Tampa Tribune and the Naples Daily News endorsed Bush. The Herald, the state's largest newspaper, told its readers it was neither "in thrall" to Gore nor blind to Bush's attributes. "We prefer the Texas governor's willingness to experiment with new solutions to major issues, like education reform, that don't rely on government," the Herald editorial reads. "We like his willingness to question Social Security and Medicare; we like that he is the brother of Florida's governor, Jeb Bush, whom we support and admire. And we fear that Mr. Gore will not be able to surmount the partisan divides in Washington, D.C., that are so dispiriting. "Nonetheless, Mr. Gore is ready now to be a good president where Mr. Bush is not. Mr. Gore has sound judgment, a brilliant intellect, core values and passion for service." The Naples Daily News cited Bush's "practical, principled view that the federal government's role in American life should be restrained." The Tampa Tribune published its endorsement of Bush last week, saying Gore has left no doubt that he would send American troops anywhere and that his support of "partial-birth abortion, the killing of a live baby in the process of being born, is a grave insult to our species." "What the American people need in the White House is a moderate man of mainstream convictions, a man both strong and humble, who will release us from the ugliness and embarrassments of the past eight years," the Tribune wrote. "We believe George W. Bush is that man." But the St. Petersburg Times said Bush could not "begin to match Gore's depth and experience" and "for all his charm, has a skimpy resume and an incurious mind." The Times also warned that some of Bush's policies would "threaten the significant economic and social gains of the past eight years," pointing to the likelihood that the next president will appoint at least a couple of justices to the U.S. Supreme Court.
