However, the world would be one sad place if left to engineers. It's too scary for to even consider. Not a bunch you want making decisions. They are great if you give them a task with specific instructions as to the output you want. Give them a problem with unkown variables and non measurable outcome and they freeze like deer in headlights. That's the world we live in, one of multiple unkown inputs and chaotic results. It's not the world of the slide rule nor of the engineer. I think you're probably an engineer. Sorry if this bursts any delusions you had about how important you are. MBAs are a dime a dozen. There must be 500 night schools alone for MBAs now. If you can pay for the sheepskin, it's yours. Then they all become "consultants". A pathetic bunch who add less as a group than just a few doctors, lawyers and PhDs. Their necessity has been brought on by the speed of change in the last decade. As change slows, watch them die out like dinosaurs. If you want true scholars and students you must look to the Doctorates of the world. The true thinkers. That is where you will find true liberal thinkers. Liberal meaning they possess open minds. Artists are another group who are liberal thinkers, as well as any innovators. In the last group you will find any liberal engineers that exist, where the new concepts are formed and boundries are broken. People with stagnant mossy rocks for brains will never be important to the future. That's the category for most engineers. I know many Doctors, lawyers and PHds who come from humble beginnings. Dad was an auto worker, Mom and Dad were farmers, Dad owned an auto repair shop etc etc. I don't know any lawyers that receive government grants. Most doctors I know receive some payments from medicare, but most struggle against HMOs for the right to properly treat their patients. I know many PHds who survive on private grants. I'm afraid you are way off base.
