Aw shucks, you know what my answer is going to be, don't you? I figure the people who do good because they are afraid of not doing good, or because they want a reward are less worthy- relatively speaking of course :-)

But I'm still glad they are doing good, if they are.

I had this discussion with my brother's first wife, a Fundamentalist. She gave me the usual pitch that "if I didn't believe in Jesus as my personal Savior, I wouldn't go to Heaven." I told her that it was good enough to not mess with people and that I believed that if such judgement occurred it was not without context. God was smart enough to figure out who the jerks were and who wasn't.

I, like you Solon, tend to think the Deity is gonna be at least as smart as me, but probably a lot smarter. It would recognize that my compassion was a good thing and moments of self-sacrifice. Besides, as I mentioned before, my Mormon cousin can always smuggle me in as part of her extended family.

This is my version of Pascal's Wager: I'll be nice to people when I can. It will pay off now, and maybe in the future. Believing in Jesus and doing nothing else looks really lame in comparison.
