The IDE controller must be simply standard. They did
reasonably well with 750 chipset. If you owe the
IDE design, it must be trivial for a normal architect
to maintain registers compatibility, therefore
there should be no problem with software driver.
In AMD's own setup,

amd.com

they used SCSI-160 external controller with 15k rpm
drive, and it does not seem to help much either.
Therefore I am afraid I am not kidding...
