In the case of humans our thoughts have some bearing on the future possibilities but are not the final word, nor even the most important determination.

Wow. What a different perspective you and I have on the degrees of freedom afforded us. I think that the will is the single greatest determining factor of my reality. If I wanted to change my life right now, I could do it. Merely by will. Surely, there are limits on what I can do immediately, but if I put in place levers and seeds (both metaphors possessing some amplification), I can fundamentally change my life in 5 years. I could quit my job and apply to graduate school tomorrow and get a Ph. D. in meteorology (one of my untaken realities of 15 years ago). I can more reasonably afford to do this now and I still have the aptitude. These and two other factors: will and time bring the reality into view. I don't have the will or the 5 year "curing time" at this instant, but a command decision on my part could cause this to happen.

I warn people that what you think about comes to pass. There is almost a metaphysical connection between my reading about cars in the classifieds and my getting one. The first act precedes the physical reality of the second in more than a mechanistic way, IMO. If I don't want to buy a car, I don't read the car classifieds.
