Actually, Hermetic studies (as I use it) means pertaining to Hermes Trigmegistus. The thesis of this belief is "So above, so below", that we are a microcosm of the macrocosm and is also rooted in gnostic and noetic beliefs about the nature of reality. There is a symmetry and beauty in such a belief in that at all scales, the Cosmos are fractals of the same recurrent themes. This is different than the meaning of a "hermetic seal" (keeping the outside from the inside, sealed). Hermetic belief is that the outside and the inside are one and mutable.
