Applied Materials to Refurbish Used Chip-Making Gear
October 30, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Applied Materials Japan Inc. plans to start a new business in refurbishing used semiconductor-manufacturing equipment.

The Japanese unit of U.S.-based Applied Materials Inc., the world's largest producer of chip-making gear, is responding to the fact that supply of new equipment is tight, leading to lengthy delivery times. It hopes to satisfy its customers through economical deliveries of refurbished machines.

Environmental concerns are leading more manufacturers worldwide to consider recycling used machinery, and a new kind of market appears to be evolving.

Applied Materials plans to start with chemical vapor deposition devices and etching devices.

Used machines are recovered from customers, disassembled and refitted with components that feature the latest technology, and resold at prices 30-40% below those of new equipment.
