Well I am going to agree with you on materialism and it's effect on parental time, etc.. but it is the choice that THEY (as individual parents) make. Our choice (my wifes and my choice) was to forego the large house and other material things so that she could stay home (the past 16 years) until our kids were all in school full time. She is now getting an educ degree (after having almost completed a masters in science many years ago). She became interested in teaching through her involvement as a frequent helper in our kids classrooms.

Families (historically,immigrant families) that make the sacrifice now for their children are rewarded in the next generation. What are we owed as a society (ultimately - as individuals) but an opportunity to improve our situation? You make good choices, you are rewarded. You make bad ones, well - that's life.

I recognize that capitalism is imperfect, but it is the best system - hands down.
