GVTucker,<<<He sat there in front of the whole school, my friends and I at the front with him. He threw all the papers on the table. "This is a bunch of bull sh#t.">>>

Thanks for sharing a great moment in Business school with us. That moment must have made going to business school worthwhile.

It would be great to have Welch, when he retires, go around giving lectures to leaders of Corporate America and making the USA more competitive in the world.

Intel should be the first stop. Shake those guys up a bit. Cut out the bs.

Welch couldn't tell those guys on how to produce a better chip. He would leave that up to the guys on this thread: John, Paul, Jim, Scumbria, Elmer, Ali, et al.

But he could teach them a few things about passion and sound bites. He could teach them to manage expectations and analysts.

It would be mandatory that the CFO and John Hull attend.

Mary

Hi GV, RE: "'Corporate culture', IMO, is pretty much a BS topic to write about. And thus, most of my group's paper a lot of silly buzz words that were popular at the time, a la "Search For Excellence.""

edit: deleted.

RE: "It didn't go over so well with Mr. Welch."

If someone wrote a paper on the latest pop-jargon like, "Search For Excellence" I could understand this.

RE: "He sat there in front of the whole school, my friends and I at the front with him. He threw all the papers on the table. "This is a bunch of bull sh#t." This was followed by many more disparaging words, including the F-word more than I have ever heard from anyone outside of Coach K."

It's sad to hear that Mr. Welch was verbally abusive during this particular course.

One of my favorite sports coach is Phil Jackson - who was successful in leading through the use of his intelligence.

RE: "Mr. Welch did not tolerate BS well. And GE has been the benefactor of that attitude."

There are many ways to cut out BS. One is through brute force and anger (and some companies do this), but another way is through earnest directness and honesty, and another way is through a corporate culture that doesn't accept it via accountability core to its culture.

I had asked several successful Silicon Valley CEOs separately what they felt are characteristics of successful companies. They listed several significant items. And all of them mentioned corporate culture. What was interesting to me: some of the ingredients mentioned for corporate culture were the same - aka Silicon Valley Culture.

Regards,
Amy J
