I find it interesting (disheartening) that the spread continued to widen throughout the day and closed at its worst level.

If the merger goes through, it doesn't matter where the spread is now. It seems the spread tends to widen whenever the stock and market are weaker, perhaps out of general fear. I don't think the cos. have released any information indicating a reduced likelihood of the merger passing.
