I think AMD is waiting for the P4 to actually debut, before releasing Mustang.

We'll get some details, and hopefully a demo [AMD are you listening?] at Comdex, but they may hold off on a ship date until Intel shows their cards.

They certainly aren't going to ship Mustang in volume this quarter, and they have a big advantage in current conditions: No P4, P3 stuck at 1 GHz.

I'd guess the higher clocked Tbirds are insurance, in case Intel actually manages to ship the P4 Nov 20th, and it doesn't suck quite as much as it seems like it will now.
They'd announce Mustang PR, in that event, but there might not be enough 760 infrastructure for Mustang to take over by then. (Mustang is only 266 FSB, right?)

RE:"Why does that mean that they have actual Tbirds running at those speeds? I'm sure they do have a few, but I'm not entirely sure they have enough to make a difference.

I'd personally like to see AMD release Mustang and its ilk ASAP, rather than clocking the older Athlon models up to 1.4GHz."

Insurance if need be. Not sure we'll see 1.4 Ghz T-birds.
The fact that a T-bird would run at 1.75v without a voltage jump just says the t-bird has more in it without speed path work. OTOH, The mustang is supposed to be tweaked for less current draw which would mean less heat...
Mustang is supposed to have 2 more pipeline stages so it should clock better...but I yield to Scumbria.

Jim

PS...What the Mustang really needs is better branch prediction...
