San Diego-based Qualcomm's(QCOM.O) shares ended on Monday down 9.0 percent, or $6-3/4, to $68-1/8, after falling to as low as $66-5/16. Volume was a robust 14 million shares. The company's shares have fallen from a high of $179-5/16 at the beginning of the year. Analysts said the market was concerned about Qualcomm's exposure to the New York-based satellite phone company, which posted a third-quarter loss on Monday that came in bigger than analysts had expected at five times the year earlier level. "The concern is that Qualcomm is a supplier to Globalstar. So certainly with the exposure there and Globalstar down 50 percent you can't expect great things to happen to (Qualcomm)," Banc of America Securities analyst Mark McKechnie said. Meanwhile, a report that Globalstar's chief financial backer, Loral Space & Communications Ltd. (LOR.N), would provide it no further financial support helped send Globalstar shares down 60 percent to $2-3/8. Its shares have fallen from a 12-month high of $53-12/16 at the start of the year, raising questions as to whether it would join competitors in declaring bankruptcy. In addition to providing handsets to Globalstar, Qualcomm was also one of its 5 founding parters and has a 6 percent equity stake in a limited partnership with Globalstar to use its CDMA technology to develop satellite systems, according to company Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings. A spokeswoman said that in the June quarter, Qualcomm's revenue from both Globalstar and OmniTRACS amounted to $167.2 million, or 23.4 percent of its total revenue of $713.5 million during that period. OmniTRACS is a unit of Qualcomm that handles two-way communications systems and satellite tracking. 16:10 10-30-00
