But I'm also trying to figure out how one can do so and not lose their shirt. That discussion has been pretty thin here." If you are buying and holding, and have insignificant margin, how are you losing your shirt, if you are buying companies that you have no plans on selling for years? These are stock prices that are going down, RR. For example, BVSN is growing at something over 200%. It's stock is getting killed(or was). If BVSN grows at a similar rate for another year, and then slows but maintains a 50% growth rate for 2 more years, the numbers suggest it should have significant stock price appreciation from this point on. The risk is that business slows too much. Its not a risk that you buy and it goes down more because you want it to go down until you are done, unless you suffer forced sales, which you won't with no margin. Berkshire Hathaway went down by 60% in the 73-74 debacle. It's largest investment, Geico, went down about 70% more from Buffett's purchase price. It almost went bankrupt. Buffett went from a net worth of about 30 million to a net of 12. Supposedly Warren was happy all the time. I can tell you I have whipped and I mean whipped Buffett's first 16 year track record by a lot. An now I have topped his 60% drop by a little. If I can get happy about this whole thing, I am declaring victory. Obviously Warren kept his mind out of the turmoil and felt the market would reward him if he chose good investments, EVENTUALLY. I think this thread was designed to come up with these ideas, out of new economy stocks. It wasn't designed to guide you about your margin balance, or whether you could possibly have other investments that do just as well, which should be obvious(especially now). If you think we are all nuts to be investing in new economy stocks, you should short the stocks or ignore us, or maybe make fun of us. But you aren't allowed to make fun of us FOR LONG here. It takes up space, among other things, and really doesn't help you or us out much.
