Windsock:
At least with RDRAM you can configure 2 GB of system memory. It seems that DDR is limited to 256 MB of 200 MHz memory at this point

Well, they have been designing away since 1991 and there is no relief in sight. It appears to take the memory industry about 5 years to get something out the door from start to finish. SDRAM began in 1991 and did not ship until 1995.
RDRAM began in 1991 and did not ship until 1995. DDR began in 1996 and will not ship in any volume until 2001. So it looks like about 5 to 5.5 years.

I suspect that the memory industry is going to go through another round of consolidation and the financially weak players like Hyundai and Micron may drop out of the competition because they lack the profit s to fund their move to the more advanced process technologies. NEC and Samsung are already making these moves and have ample profits to stay ahead of the weaker players.

Micron Electronics appears to have gotten its head handed to it by Intel today and they will not be carrying the P4 desktop platforms. Their P4 business will go to DELL, GTW and CPQ.

:)
