The patent discusses a clever way of reducing the probability of errors being caused by alpha particles which have been absorbed in the bulk of the substrate as distinct from the surface layer where the transistors live.

ECC or error detection may still be needed to deal with those (much less frequent) ionisation events which occur in the surface layers.
