John,

DDR systems with unregistered DDR memory are going to drop off the face of the planet. Intel has no plans for unregistered DDR memory just registered. Those unregistered DDR sticks will cost about 80-90% of what RDRAM costs.

You must be kidding. The vast majority of mainstream and low end system will use unbuffered DDR. Registered DDR will be used only in servers and possibly very high end workstations.

Re: DDR systems with unregistered DDR memory

One of the neat things about Abit (the motherboard company) is that they've added extra hardware drivers to the memory bus on some of their better boards. Nobody else (that I know of) does this. For instance, the systems we have at work that use the Abit KA7 support up to 4 unregistered DIMMs of up to 512 meg each on a single channel. That's 2 gig on a one channel Athlon motherboard and we have one set up that way and it works great.

And the memory was cheap and unbuffered memory is faster than registered memory. It's a win - win. It was a little hard to find 512 meg unbuffered DIMMs, our VAR got them from Apacer.

I wonder if Abit will do the same thing for their DDR boards?

Dan
