Jim,
You will learn not to trust Mr. Otellini...

"5). Mr. Otellini said that P4 performance will be roughly equivalent to PIII on a clock-for-clock basis, but there will be a clear clock speed separation between the high end of PIII and the low end of P4 (unlike when PIII was introduced and overlapped with PII)."

Is this "roughly" on the same scale as David Wu's "not much bigger" [die size] of PIV over PIII, when talking about the relative die sizes of the P-iV and the P-III earlier this year?

Just wondering...

even from what you selected it does not look good for intel
intel admits that rambus was a mistake but sticks with it no matter what and even offers rebates?
40%? Performance on par with pIII at the same clock speed iplies improvement of far less than 40%. 20% is more reasonable number.... That particular point can blow away alright, only not athlon but intel
amd is selling everything they can make and yet pc market is not as strong as it was expected? Well, maybe not for intel chips :-))
Fixed cost and larger die size? I thought that just few months back intel was not able to meet demand and now it cutting unit production?

ps but I do admire your glass-is-half-full approach

Performing equivalently to a P-III at the same clock rate could mean many things. For example, it could mean that a P4 operating at 1.0 GHz with dual channel Rambus would perform on par with a 1.0 GHz P-III with PC133 SDRAM. Cripple the P4 with PC133 SDRAM, or even PC1600 DDR SDRAM and the relative performance could drop.
