AMD, Transmeta Develop Low-Power Notebook Processors, CT Says

Taipei, Oct. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc., the world's No. 2 processor maker, is cooperating with Transmeta Corp. to design chips with low power consumption for the notebook computer market, the Commercial Times Web site reported.

AMD is working with Transmeta to develop versions of its Athlon and Duron processors that consume only three watts of power and hope to reach just one watt of power consumption, the paper said, citing unnamed AMD executives briefing Taiwanese notebook makers.

AMD yesterday introduced a 1.2-megahertz version of its Athlon processor and plans to introduce a 1.5-megahertz version of its Thunderbird processor in the first quarter next year, as part of a plan to take 30 percent of the notebook computer market in 2001, the report said.

Transmeta, a closely held chip designer in Silicon Valley, introduced its first low-power consumption processors this year. Japanese notebook computer makers such as Sony Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. have started production of Transmeta-based notebooks.
