Focus On The Forbes 500s: Sun, IBM Push Into Wireless

It appears that IBM and Sun Microsystems, blood enemies in the server business, will now go at it in wireless.

Today Palo Alto, Calif.-based Sun (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) announced the creation of a wireless business unit, a $100
million investment fund and applications for wireless gear. Not to be outdone, IBM (NYSE: IBM - news) announced a
server, a suite of applications and services geared toward wireless applications.

Targeting, among other sectors, telecommunications operators, IBM is working with BT Cellnet, Telecom Italia, Avenir and UniXS, which will use its technology.

Sun is launching this wireless strategy today at an event at its Santa Clara, Calif., offices. And Sun's Java programming language will be included in a software platform developed for wireless applications by Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN - news).

Is it a coincidence that the pair came out with wireless news on the same day? Not likely. IBM has been trying to catch up to Sun in server sales, which have helped push Sun to fiscal 2000 sales of nearly $16 billion.

IBM, with 1999 sales of $87 billion, has beefed up its server offering to counter Sun. But the nascent wireless market--for which analysts predict huge growth--is up for grabs.
