'You are now talking to 25 new Republicans.' But I was
sweet when I said it."

Clinton did send a videotaped message in his place but the
star-studded crowd at Merv Griffin's Beverly Hilton Hotel
reacted with cynicism, especially when the President talked about
how government was helping lead the fight against diabetes —
"with Hillary pushing all the way."

The evening's emcee, Jay Leno, had a field day. "Clinton said
he's on the job in Washington. That one's too easy. I can't go there
because I think I know what job he's talking about."
