Bush, GOP California dreaming

POLITICS: The Texas governor's decision to
campaign vigorously here has energized the party
-- and closed the gap with Gore.

George W. Bush's fans in California never dreamed they'd see this:
the Texas governor campaigning here a week before the election.

And Al Gore's legions in the state never expected their guy to be
forced to match Bush's move.

"I thought this thing would be over presidentially here by now,'' said
Wylie Aitken, president of the Orange County Democratic
Foundation.

Peter Godfrey of Fullerton figured the best the Bush campaign
could do was "energize California."

"All of a sudden we realized maybe if we worked a little bit harder
we could win this thing," said Godfrey, who with his wife, Lois, is
Bush's south county volunteer coordinator. "All of a sudden
California is a player."
