Great article, this article illustrates CAMP's role in
Sprint's Broadband service

California Amplifier MMDS Equipment Deployed By Sprint Broadband Direct
PR Newswire - October 04, 2000 13:03

CAMARILLO, Calif., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- California Amplifier (Nasdaq: CAMP) announced that it has received an order from Sprint Corp. (NYSE: FON) to develop and provide high performance hub planar antennas for the deployment of Sprint Broadband Direct services in selected markets. In addition, its AirStream transceiver products are currently deployed in San Jose, Phoenix, Tucson, Colorado Springs and Detroit as part of Sprint Broadband Direct's two-way high-speed Internet service access using fixed wireless MMDS technology.

The high performance hub planar antenna allows service providers to deploy 24-degree sectors where frequency is reused in every other sector. The hub planar antenna is an adaptation of California Amplifier's patented planar-array antenna, optimized to reduce side-lobes and increase front-to-back ratio. It provides almost twice the frequency reuse as earlier sectorized deployments using the company's Yagi-Horn antenna, thereby doubling system capacity. The new antenna is contained in a small package that creates minimal loading and space requirements on hub towers, which simplifies tower usage approvals.

California Amplifier AirStream transceivers are used in conjunction with indoor broadband wireless modems to provide the overall customer premise solution. The AirStream transceiver converts received signals at RF frequencies into a frequency range suitable for the indoor wireless modem to utilize. Additionally, the AirStream transceiver converts and amplifies signals to be transmitted by the indoor modem to allow for the transmission at RF frequencies. In essence, the AirStream transceiver adds the final interface to the wireless environment at the customer's premises. California Amplifier's AirStream transceivers have been designed for two-way wireless applications such as high-speed Internet access, private data networking and telephony services. Currently available in a variety of configurations and frequency plans, these products have been optimized to meet the demand requirements of two-way MMDS network architectures. Future generations of AirStream products will expand available upstream frequency range to increase upstream data capacity and address issues related to ease of installation in non-line-of-sight environments.

"We are pleased to be the provider of outdoor customer premise equipment for the rollouts of Sprint Broadband's fixed wireless service," said Fred Sturm, Chief Executive Officer of California Amplifier. "In addition to supporting Sprint on outdoor customer premise equipment, we are also pleased to be able to play a critical role in expanding the upstream capacity of Sprint's new system deployments with our hub antenna solution. The progress of rollouts in the Phoenix and Tucson markets demonstrates that MMDS is a viable technology to compete against DSL and cable modems."

I have had a CAMP antenna on my roof for 1 day! So far I like it.

Turns out that even though the sprint site showed my house in a shadowed area (behind a hill) I do have line of sight from the roof to their transmitter.

The installer told me that they have ~30 installers in the Co Springs area and they make about two calls a day. The 75% qualification rate sounds about right from what I was told.
