Pakistan goes bonkers over possible Bush presidency -
Pakistan is going bonkers on the possibility of Bush becoming the commander-in-chief. The writer says that Bush is an ignoramus and might use death row mind set as a model to deal with the world including pakistan. The writer thinks that Gore is saner.
The writer says that American democracy is a farce. Look who is talking. He will any day take oligarchy.JPR

Growing indifference of the US electorate By Mahir Ali
Excerpt
The Democratic and Republican presidential candidates are not only required to be loaded with cash: they are also expected to lie their way into the Oval Office with calculated soundbites based on cliches that are expected to capture the popular imagination. The contenders strictly follow instructions not only on what to say but on how to dress, when to smile, how long to kiss and the like. They are models on parade. It's a paradigm of democracy reduced to a farce.

Gore would make a saner, and therefore safer, occupant of the Oval Office. International wounds would continue to fester under Gore, although perhaps with less intensity than they would under Bush. Unable though he may be to follow the dictates of his conscience, Gore is not unintelligent. There could probably be circumstances in which a dimwit would be preferable to a smart-alecky White House occupant, but overall the opposite is true. The brute strength of the US militates against entrusting its nuclear arsenal to an ignoramus. Bush's propensity to authorise executions in Texas marks him as too dangerous an individual to determine the fate of the world.

Pak's Jihad culture is coming home to roost--- to paraphrase Jessica Stern in Foreign affairs.

When Jihadis return home By Ashfak Bokhari
Stern, whose article is titled "Pakistan's Jihad culture", is a lecturer in public policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government

Read these alarming notes:
1:current agenda is limited to 'liberating Kashmir'... their next objective is to turn Pakistan into a truly Islamic state".
2:"Although their current agenda is limited to 'liberating Kashmir'... their next objective is to turn Pakistan into a truly Islamic state".
3: with South Asia as the leading locus of terrorism in the world.
4: Jihadis carry on in their own way: first, to avenge separation of East Pakistan and; second, using "irregulars" is a relatively cheap way to keep Indian forces tied down. The military has only to facilitate militants' passage into Indian part of Kashmir.
5: . She says Pakistan now faces a typical "principal-agent" problem: the interests of state (principal) and those of the militant groups (the agent) are not fully aligned. In other words, the Jihadi groups (that Pakistan supports) and Sunni sectarian militants (that Pakistan opposes) overlap significantly and Pakistan government is inadvertently promoting sectarianism within the country.
6: Boys trained to fight in Kashmir are also indoctrinated to consider Shias as "Kafirs".
7: Sunnis against Shiaas respectively supported by Saudis and Iranians
8: fought in Afghanistan are now fighting in Kashmir and "are to continue looking for new jihads to fight - even against Pakistan itself."
9: Madrassahs, about 40,000 in Pakistan, teach their students that jihad is a spiritual duty. Wealthy Pakistanis, who subscribe to jihad doctrine, donate their money, NOT SONS, to the cause while poor families donate their sons, not money, as they believe that this will help them in the next life. it a better option to let their children die in jihad rather than from disease. 10: Little osamas are born everyday. Babies are named Osamas.
