Kilo,

Your comments and opinions on what it takes to turn Novell around sound soooooooooo familiar. I fully understand why you could not express these opinions while employed with Novell (and it puts into perspective Scott's change of heart and opinions before and after joining Novell - I can only imagine what Scott really wants to tell us all vs. defend the faith - hehehe - poking at your Scott).

BUT, I am glad to see that what many of us have been saying on this board are dead on to your opinions. Unfortunately I honestly think that there is no one in Novell (not even Eric) that has the guts to make such radical company saving moves. It is simply too big an initiative and there are simply too many people inside Novell that can squash this required cleanup to let it happen.

For example, if people like Nortz and Nelson are the bodies that need axing, how will it happen when they are involved Officer positions (or critical decision makers). Do you think they would say "for the sake of the company I will agree that I am part of the problem"? You would think so since they both have large equity positions and would likely become much richer by making the company healthier. But I would have to suspect that they have egos (like most of us do) that would say, "I am not the problem so it wont solve anything to get rid of me".

So, it is up to Eric and the board to make tough and independent decisions. From the meetings and knowledge I have of Eric, I would speculate that Eric is too nice a guy to make those tough decision.

Don't get me wrong... these radical changes will eventually happen at Novell, but it will not be within Novell Management's control. Novell will be forced to made these changes in the form of a forced conceded acquisition / merger. At that time, te acquiring company will make those tough decisions. and Eric will now possibly be on the chopping block as opposed to working the chopping block.

In he meantime, we all sit here and watch the inevitable arrive. Its Novell Management's choice on how they would like the inevitable to arrive - under their direction or someone else's.

MHO...

Cheers!

Toy

You say :"One of Novell's great downfalls has been a virtually non-existent developer community. That needs to be
addressed... in a big way."

but then you also say..

"Could Novell get more milage from making NDS open source?? That question is so esoteric as to not really be relevant"

It seems to me very relevant! The recent RHAT deal seems to indicate that they are moving in the direction of open source n'est pas?

I also disagree with

"I would abandon the move to provide more professional services and concentrate on new higher-margin software-based products."

Well the first thing you know....

>>I would also officially move the headquarters to San Jose. Sure keep the Utah space, but force all the execs to move to SJ. Or better, axe most of them and rehire. The Utah "if I don't see it it must not exist" attitude is so powerfully destructive to Novell.>>

...old Jed's a millionaire

The kinfolk said "Jed move away from there."

Said CaliforniAAYY's the place you ought to be.

So they loaded up their truck and moved to San Joseeee.

Thanks Kilo.

This ONE decision would bring more "watts" back to Novell than any single ONE thing.

And who knows, Scott may learn to "let go and reeeelax."

Peace.

GO!!
GO!!
