flapjack, that is a reason to vote for Bush. He wants to rework the tax code so it simple and fair. The reason Motorola might not have paid taxes is because they have or had clout with someone who carved out a neat little area of exemptions, exclusions and write offs. We need a very simple but fair code.

flpajack, you're right. Many techs use a stock option loophole to offset income. CSCO was one of the corps mentioned in an article I read a few weeks ago.

Actually those are the IRS rules written by the formerly led demolib congress, who you loudly proclaim to support. Now you start to see why we Republicans/conservatives want to keep control. slick willy would have never signed those tax breaks for big bad business, as he never met a tax cut he liked. So you can't blame it on the Republican congress.knc

<<Motorola I believe was one -- paid no federal income tax last year because of tax loopholes and write-offs and slick CPAs and tax lawyers and such. >>

MOT had a bad year in '98. The stock went into the low teens. They might not have had a profit that year.

Write offs are important as they encourage business expansion and that makes for jobs for guys like you.

Flap, it seems you missed or are evading my point. Corporations do not suffer tax burdens. People do. Them people is us.

As to "tax loopholes and write-offs and slick CPAs and tax lawyers and such", I quite agree. Accountants and lawyers are generally high octane dudes and dudettes and should provide crucial services. When they are used to defend against constant changes in the tax code by the pickpockets in DC and the various state capitols, their potential societal contributions are wasted.

And, yes, corporate welfare stinks. As does Joe Worker forking over a third (actually, much, much more).

I'm hardly fond of GWB, but fear the alternative worse. Under Gore, the working man's taxes will increase, and what's left would buy less.

Wasn't it Moynihan who drafted the legislation for the NY-based drug companies to get tax credits for their operating in Puerto Rico and got it passed? There are also quite a few dot-coms that pay no income tax. The income tax should be replaced with a low gross receipts tax since the public services rendered to support these operations has less to do with net income than with gross revenue.
