I did a similar calculation for 1990-1999 using historical data from quote.yahoo.com. It did not make such an extreme difference as you cited. The amount gained from (Oct1 to March31) vs (April 1 to Sept31) were in the ratio of 2:1 . .

There is an old Wall street saying. "Buy in November and sell in April". You've just dicovered why.
OTOH, this is another form of TA and is blasphemy to a lot of engineers. LOL
