11/02/00 - Russia to sell 24 tonnes of gold articles in 2000.

MOSCOW, November 2 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia in the year 2000 will have sold some nine million articles made of gold, their total weight ranging between 23 and 24 metric tonnes, deputy head of the Russian State Assay Office Boris Borisov told an international conference in Moscow on Thursday.
He said at the conference convened to discuss the status of, and prospects for the Russian market of precious metals and precious stones, that in the first six months of this year, Assay Office inspectors identified 5.600 gold articles with forged marks of assay and 17,400 items bearing no mark of assay at all.

With the assistance from the State Mint, the Assay office introduced new, specially protected marks of assay which are difficult to imitate.

Borisov admitted at the same time that not enough has been done to combat importation of contraband jewellery into Russia, primarily from Turkey.

According to the data cited at the conference by the Guild of Russian Jewelers, the shadow market of jewellery accounts for one half of the total volume of the sales of jewellery in the country, whose value amounts to one billion dollars a year.
