Bucking the region's rally, Taiwan's TWSE Index fell 119.16 to 5425.02, bringing its losses in the past five days to 10 percent. Three opposition political parties, led by the Nationalist Party, yesterday backed a proposal to impeach President Chen Shui-bian.

The power to impeach the president now rests with the abolished National Assembly. That authority will have to be transferred to parliament before the Nationalist Party can file an impeachment motion. The Nationalists plan to push for the transfer this week. Once the motion is filed, parliament has 48 hours to vote on it.
