You are right. There are different variations of basically the same product, where each needs its infrastructure. Intel is in all of these markets with established infrastructure, AMD is just trying to penetrate many of these. And just having a better processor at this very moment is not enough. A lot of work remains to be done so that this product can be sold in all the segments.

Is AMD really going head to head with Intel? Are they trying to knock Intel off or are they just trying to survive with a niche market?

Knock Intel off? That would have to be self inflicted. I think AMD is just trying to make some gains in the market share so that it moves from being a niche player to a credible competitor in a duopoly.
