I see what you mean. Basically, they're capitalist countries with comprehensive welfare systems. And the trade unions are very strong. So Sweden, for example, has the best of capitalism and socialism. I think such a program couldn't work in a country not ethnically and culturally very homogenous, though. A few years ago I saw a program on TV about how burdensome certain of the welfare-type programs have become. Workers' Comp, for example. The point was they were going to have to cut back on those programs because if people get paid generously for not working, at some point the productivity of the society is going to suffer. Surprise! And recently I read that they have cut back a lot.
