Note that a short seller gets interest on the proceeds of a short sale, so the money isn't completely dead

Interesting, I thought brokers didn't give interest payments on this. You can see how much I know about shorting! I agree that the interest income could make a big difference, especially since it is really incremental interest on the amount of margin/cash used to set the short position.
