in Portland, Ore., Bush addressed a rally of 5,000 people. Also on the same day, the GOP nominee's campaign released a
TV ad questioning Vice President Gore's truthfulness.

The ad, which is airing in battleground states, features an announcer
asking, ''Remember when Al Gore said his mother-in-law's prescription
cost more than his dog's? His own aides said the story was made up. Now
Al Gore is bending the truth again.''

Gore aides have conceded he was wrong to say an arthritis medicine cost
his mother three times as much as it cost for his dog. The figures came
from a congressional study, not from his family finances.

Kym Spell, a Gore spokeswoman, said the ad shows that Bush lied to the
American people when he said he would run a positive campaign: ''Bush is
losing and he's desperate, and now he's proven himself to be a hypocrite.''
