Reality has a habit of becoming perception.

And, on a less philosophical level, I have heard that the European financial problems are getting so bad that Dresden has put out a new price list announcing that AMD's "fortitude" will be reduced, effective November 1, to threetitude. :)

dmf - Re: "Do you believe there was a time when the prevailing opinion was that whatever was good for Intel was good for the industry? Was that just my perception rather than reality?"

Nearly every new processor introduction by Intel - since the days of the 8086 - have been near universally greeted by the Media, Pundits and analysts as:

1. Not needed - the prior generation of CPUs is fast enough.

2. A complete bust - the performance is lower than the prior generation of CPUs.

3. Unmanufacturable - the die is too big - Intel will never make them in volume.

4. Too little, too late - newer technologies from competitiors will kill Intel's new product - RISC, PowerPC, RISC, Integrated CPUs, TransMeta,...

5. etc., etc.

There has NEVER BEEN a universal regard for Intel and its new products.
