On the Altera situation, Wall Street is having a tough time making up its mind on how it should be evaluated based on the following sequence of announcements, starting with the original Altera announcement last night. From Briefing.com.

AFTER THE CLOSE (31-Oct-00)******

Altera (ALTR) 40 15/16 +3 15/16: Trading down 4 1/16 after hours to 36 7/8 after company guides numbers lower on its website; company says that resales in October were up 15% on July, but
below management expectations, and that it now sees this quarter's sequential revenue growth at the lower end of the previous 12-15% guidance.

Nov 1 - 10:00 -- 11:00 ET (Updated throughout the hour)******

Altera (ALTR) 35 1/2 -5 7/16: -- Update -- Morgan Stanley Dean Witter downgrades to OUTPERFORM from STRONG BUY rating with a price target of $65.

Nov 1 - 12:00 -- 13:00 ET (Updated throughout the hour)******

Altera (ALTR) 34 3/16 +15/16: -- Update -- Bear Stearns reiterates BUY rating and price target of $100. Firm is positive on the stock and does not believe that yesterday's revised estimates for
the December quarter is not indicative of any fundamental change in the PLD industry and that the update is consistent with recent announcements in the communications and networking
equipment markets, indicating lower but still healthy growth rates; sees shares as undervalued relative to ALTR's ability to generate strong earnings growth.
