Heretic,

I guess I should clarify that by saying the public needs to be educated, but the way that is delivered needs to be changed. To be realistic, the public school system is not going away tomorrow. There are billions of dollars invested in infrastructure, physical buildings, fields, supplies, computers etc. We should be able to get a better return on those investments through competition, rather than completely starting over. By adding competition to education I think good new schools will be created, and laggards will either catch up and become good schools themselves or be shut down. The bottom line should be the education of the children, and how best to do that, not to preserve the teacher's union or the fact that over half of our education dollars go into administration of the educational system, rather than for actual learning.
