Joan - while Kaplan's work may be light on scholarship I have found some of his observations worth noting.

A good bit of what he had to say in Balkan Ghosts matched my personal impressions and experiences.

As I recall, he warned the reader of his intent with that book and even tried to put it in better context when others began to quote it in connection with the Kosovo experience.

I have read little of his other work.
