I suspect that in Compaq's eyes peer-to-peer or distributed computing is just another name for desktop computing. I also suspect that companies like Intel and Compaq are hoping that peer-to-peer/distributed computing will keep driving the need for powerful personal computers with gigahertz cpu's and terabyte disks.

I'm not convinced of this: the network is the bottleneck in achieving peer-to-peer capabilities, not the computers at each end. You only need a 400MHz Celeron to do real-time video rendering direct from DVD or over the net. Not to mention the dangers inherent in opening up one's system to access by others. It's only a matter of time before somebody figures out a Napster virus. Hmm, I bet Sony would be interested in that idea :)

The only reason I continue to invest in Intel is because of their push into the network processor and wireless arenas, in the hope that WINDTEL takes over where WINTEL left off.
