Can any harm really come of this if the information acquired by the hackers

My opinion only:

Sort of but not really. There are two plus million lines of code that were looked at. Nobody without 100 engineers on staff is going to be able to get through it. Those with the ability, are not going to want to go to prison or get the sh*t sued out of them for corporate espionage. Yes, there are procedures that MS would rather NOT have public. Those that can't be reverse engineered. Yes it is a concern but the business moves very fast.

Could it be copied and reproduced? Yeah, but it would be easier just to copy the CD. :)

And as far as security and embarassment. There is no system built that cannot be cracked. The best you can hope for is that the threat of going to jail will help.

Will the knowledge indicate MS future directions, yes, assuming that the code goes gold, and even MS hasn't made that decision yet, but so does reading the press releases.

I am not belittling the crime, but it will have no significant economic effect.

...is this really an issue? --- The issue is that MS has an ongoing public perception that it's systems are not secure. Jeez, if it's that easy to hack into microsoft.com itself, what does that say about the security of data on a MS customer's server where they don't have highly paid expert administration? --- Who wants this to happen to *them? --- Sure, no system is altogether secure, but apparently, MS's systems are at the low end of the spectrum; not the first choice when given a choice. --- Worse, the same type of problem keeps popping up again and again. What's MS doing about it? Not much, apparently. --- This widening perception is happening at a very bad time. -JCJ
