the rate spread has narrowed somewhat lately, but it is still pretty big. in fact, i recently had to visit my bank over here as new EU regulations have blown a hole in Austrian banking secrecy regulations, and every savings book now has to be registered in the name of its owner. i was amazed at the ridiculously low interest paid on savings deposits here. it's approximately 2%, well below the official inflation rate. a.k.a. daylight robbery....

Tip:

There is a full two percentage point difference. No wonder U.S. companies are going over there to borrow (and this puts further downward pressure on the Euro).
