My 83 year old mom took a bad fall a few years ago, and ended up with a broken foot and a badly wrenched back. She was unable to live on her own, and had to go into a care facility for a few months. Though she was in constant pain and depressed at her loss of independence, mom tried to keep a stiff upper lip and, as a result, gained the respect of and special treatment by the staff. Her roomie, on the other hand, apparently felt that loud moaning helped relieve her own pain, and though she was no less damaged than mom, did so continuously. Mom was removed to another room, which helped greatly in her recovery, and her now ex-roomie received minimal courtesy and care from the staff during the remainder of her stay. No surprise; just human nature.
