PT,

I hadn't considered that they might be talking about the next gen Durons. That would make a lot more sense, since I haven't seen any reports of serious Duron-specific bugs with the current chips. (Where serious means "can't be fixed with a BIOS update or setting change").

It would also give some continuity to the report (which talks about the other next gen chips).

Well, if true, that could hinder the upgrade from current motherboards to the new Durons. On the other hand, at least most current KT133 boards can take Athlon 1.0+ Ghz, which may be very affordable early next year when the Palomino is out.

Chris

Considering Durons have been used in KT-133 mobos for months now, I'd be surprised if this is a 'fresh' problem.

Why has no one else seen it?

Conversely, if all the mobos have these 'extra parts' to bypass the problem... to what extent is it a problem any longer? I guess cost could fall a fraction if VIA revs the chipset... but this doesn't sound like big news.

The Palomino/Hammer stuff is more interesting. AMDZone's version of the rumor is so brief that it's hard to even tell what exactly it is:

AMD may have changed their plan for the Mustang series of CPUs. Apparently AMD may accelerate their Hammer series and rely on Palomino SMP systems in the meantime.

"in the meantime", as opposed to what? Given that SMP isn't here until Q2 2001 at the earliest, this sounds odd. Does this mean, AMD will release the desktop and mobile bits of the Mustang FAMILY, but skip Mustang itself (the large L2 server chips), figuring, if they don't get server partners til mid 2001, they might as well sell them Hammers?
