People in the crowd I talked to are pissed that Missouri's Dems attacked while Ashcroft suspended his campaign out of respect for the Governor. I have never voted a straight ticket for either party. Their moves in the "Still With Mel" or "Still For Mel" nonsense has moved me one big step closer. I had already decided to vote to send all 3 GOP candidates to Washington. Now I know I will only vote for GOP candidates to go to Jeff City as well. That leaves me with deciding who I vote for in Franklin County races (a Dem county). Danforth is addressing the Missouri Senate race between U.S. Senator John Ashcroft and the late Mel Carnahan. > > Senator Danforth says, "John Ashcroft has great integrity and values. He brings honor, thoughtfulness and perspective to every challenge. John has the courage to put principle over politics - that's leadership. Missouri needs John Ashcroft's experience in the Senate." > > During his three terms in the United States Senate, his service as Special Counsel to investigate the Waco incident, and his years as Missouri's Attorney General, Senator Danforth has earned the deep respect of people in Missouri and throughout the United States for integrity, fairness and commitment to public service. > > To watch the ad and send your feedback go to: johnashcroft.com > > For More information on Ashcroft's leadership and experience go to: johnashcroft.com > > ____________________________________________________________ > > THE KANSAS CITY STAR ENDORSES SENATOR ASHCROFT > > "There is a strong case to send Ashcroft back to the U.S. Senate." > > Ashcroft for U.S. Senate in Missouri, November 1, 2000 > > The contest for the U.S. Senate in Missouri was one of the fiercest and tightest in the nation until the Democratic candidate, Mel Carnahan, was killed in a plane crash Oct. 16, too late for his name to be removed from the ballot. > Carnahan, a two-term governor, was challenging Republican Sen. John Ashcroft, himself a former two-term governor, in a contest that was thought to be crucial to which party will control the Senate next year. > > Carnahan was an outstanding governor whose stature is reaching mythic proportions in a massive outpouring of sympathy. Demoralized Democrats settled on a plan to ask Gov. Roger Wilson for a pledge to appoint Carnahan's widow, Jean, to the U.S. Senate seat if her husband drew more votes next Tuesday than Ashcroft. > > Some polling numbers suggest this could indeed happen. > > Jean Carnahan has now said she would accept the appointment. Democrats insist all this is legal and would pose no constitutional questions. Republicans cite the U.S. Constitution to declare that a dead man cannot legally be elected to the U.S. Senate. Instead, Republicans insist that a special election would have to be held in accordance with the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that provides for popular elections of senators. > > If Mel Carnahan were to draw more votes than Ashcroft, it sets up an inevitable legal dispute that could leave Missouri without one of its senators for many months, if not years. > > This newspaper has supported both Ashcroft and Mel Carnahan for elections. Both men established themselves as stars of their respective political parties. We have praised both men for their leadership and accomplishments as well as criticizing them for failures or mistaken policies. > > As an institution, we have lamented the tragic passing of Mel Carnahan, the Carnahans' oldest son and a top political aide in the fatal plane crash. We have also expressed support for the surviving members of both families in their hours of inexpressible loss. > > We have the greatest admiration for Jean Carnahan. She has been a wonderful first lady who has opened the governor's mansion to the public in creative ways. She has also dedicated time and energy to the overall welfare of the state's children. > > But we believe that a seat in the U.S. Senate should be based on well-known views and a well-established platform. No matter the personal circumstances of candidates, voters in this country do not make a habit of awarding one of the country's highest elective offices out of sympathy. > > Jean Carnahan has never held elective office. Her views on most of the major issues confronting the country are unknown. > > Democrats contend that Jean Carnahan would reflect the views of her husband on every important measure, but the state's voters cannot be guaranteed of that assertion. > > If any other candidate were to present himself or herself as prepared to hold office in the U.S. Senate with no more tangible qualifications than Jean Carnahan, this discussion would end quickly. > > Voters will have four other party candidates on the ballot besides Republican Ashcroft. They are Grant Stauffer, Libertarian Party; Hugh Foley, Reform Party; Charles Dockins, Natural Law Party; and Evaline Taylor, Green Party. > > The Kansas City Star believes Missourians should make all the potential legal bickering moot by re-electing John Ashcroft. We have not agreed with all of his stands on issues, but we consider him a public servant whose integrity is unquestioned. He has a record of fiscal stewardship that has helped him gain significant majorities in five previous statewide elections. > > When Ashcroft ran for the Senate six years ago, he pledged to work toward balancing the federal budget, paying down the national debt and reforming welfare. He has worked effectively in dealing with all three issues. > > His language has been inserted into legislation that seeks to protect the integrity of Social Security, and his proposal was endorsed by the White House and the Congress in permitting faith-based agencies to participate in helping those who had escaped the welfare rolls establish themselves as productive members of society. > > Ashcroft has worked with Democratic senators in shaping anti-drug legislation and measures to help Missouri farmers gain better overseas markets for their products. > > Mel Carnahan criticized Ashcroft for failing to provide better resources for the state's school children, and Ashcroft only recently had unveiled a proposal he calls the Classroom Trust Fund that would send $200 billion to American schools over the next 10 years. > > Although Ashcroft has fought to keep firearms out of the hands of juveniles, he has been altogether too friendly to the gun lobby. We have not agreed with his opposition to abortion, although he does allow for exceptions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is endangered. > > We also have criticized Ashcroft for his incessant criticism of the desegregation lawsuits in both Kansas City and St. Louis. > > Despite our disagreements, we acknowledge that Ashcroft represents thousands of Missourians who inherently believe government governs best that governs least. There is a strong case to send Ashcroft back to the U.S. Senate for what he has pledged will be his last term there. > > ___________________________________________________________________ > > > ~~ A-TEAM ACTION ITEMS ~~ > > * Sign up at least ONE FRIEND today at: johnashcroft.com > > * EMAIL YOUR FRIENDS and family at: johnashcroft.com > > * Get Ashcroft GEAR at: johnashcroft.com > > * DONATE to Ashcroft 2000 at: johnashcroft.com > > * Download a FREE SCREEN SAVER at: johnashcroft.com > > ______________________________________________________ > > > Click on this link to cancel your Ashcroft A-Team membership: > 209.183.223.105 @hotmail.com . > > > > Paid for by the Ashcroft 2000 Committee > >
