"Tax implications?"

None for me this year. I'm riding with enough losses from April/May to give me the free 'E' ticket ride for the rest of this year. Note: buying on margin and holding come hell or high water is what got me into trouble earlier this year. I was doing fine when I bought and sold. If one is going to hold onto your stocks come heck or high water you had better not use margin! If you want to use margin you had better be sure it's a very, very good price and you are willing to start selling when you've made the minimum gain you were expecting (i.e. don't get greedy).

"Also, have you charted how this style works against had you bought and held?"

Better if I stick to my guns and my sell/buy points. Worse when I don't or venture outside of my 'core' groups of stocks (and worse yet get my money locked into these stocks!). Buy and hold has also worked better for me in long term up markets.
